Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has commended the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited for its efforts to improve and sustain power supply in the region.
He noted that ECG was able to repair electrical faults that caused frequent power outages in the region from the beginning of 2025 to date, restoring and sustaining the power supply.
Dr Amoakohene was addressing a delegation from the Ashanti Regional ECG, who paid a courtesy call on him at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Kumasi.
He recalled two technical challenges, which occurred at Anwomaso and Obuasi and affected the power supply in the region last year.
However, through the collaborative efforts of the ECG, GRIDCO, and other sector players, the challenges were resolved, restoring power supply in the region to bring relief to residents and promote economic activity.
He said, keeping the lights on, “goes a long way to support his excellency, the President’s vision of uninterrupted power supply across the country.”
Currently, Dr Amoakohene noted that public complaints about frequent power outages have drastically reduced due to the ECG's improved performance.
As someone who was actively on social media, he commended the management of ECG for adopting the social media strategy in communicating with their customers by updating the public on the company’s activities.
“I am on social media, and I must say one of the easiest ways to get updates on outages is the ECG WhatsApp Channel.
I follow that channel and frequently visit that platform for updates,” he said.
Dr Amoakohene encouraged the management of the ECG to keep it up and continue to intensify the flow of information to customers to keep them updated.
Mr Peter Kofi Fletcher, the General Manager for the ECG Ashanti Sub-transmission, said the ECG was embarking on projects in the region to maintain a stable power supply.
Among the projects was the construction of a sub-transmission line from Adoato to Barekese, which would be completed in 2026 to improve power supply from Adoato to Offinso.
This, Mr Fletcher noted, would give the Ghana Water Company a reliable power supply to pump water to the Greater Kumasi.
Other projects include the construction of a line from Anwomaso to the Airport substation, the construction of substations at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu, and other system improvement works at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point.
Mr Jonathan Adjabeng, the General Manager for the ECG, Ashanti South Region, advised the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to nominate certified electricians to work alongside the ECG for proper coordination and installation of streetlights.
“The maintenance of streetlights is the sole responsibility of the MMDAs.
The ECG only provides technical expertise during the installation process to ensure that the streetlights are installed on the right transformers and phases,’ he said.
Mr George Amoah, the General Manager of the ECG, Ashanti West Region, pledged the company’s support and commitment to ensuring the government’s project to provide streetlights for all roads is a success.
