The Foreign Affairs Ministry has said disclosed that Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atsu's twin sister and elder brother were present at the site when his body was recovered on Saturday morning.
It said the Ghana Embassy in Turkey is working in hand with the Turkish government in making the necessary arrangements to fly the body of the former Chelsea and Newcastle winger to Ghana for burial.
In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry said confirmed receiving the “unfortunate news of the recovery of the body of Christian Atsu from the rubble of his apartment,” after the February 6 earthquake in Turkey, Syria and its surrounding.
It added, “This comes after almost 12 days of tortuous search by a rescue team.”
The Foreign Ministry said the Ghana Embassy in Turkey which broke the news to it further said the body was recovered early Saturday morning.
”The elder brother and twin sister of Christian Atsu and an Officer of the Embassy were present at the site when the body was recovered.
“Government extends to the widow and family of Christian Atsu our deepest condolences. The Embassy is currently making the necessary arrangements with the assistance of the Government of Türkiye to have the body transported to Ghana for burial,” it added.
The Ministry said the Ghanaians will be updated on further developments.
