The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Awutu Senya East has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to bolster security in the constituency to avert a recurrence of the violence that marred registration at the Steps to Christ Registration Centre during the 2020 elections.
During the 2020 polls, violence broke out at the registration centre when armed individuals opened fire on the crowd, resulting in one person sustaining gunshot injuries.
Addressing journalists on Saturday, 30th November, the NDC Youth Organiser for the constituency, Nash Nyande Adams, disclosed that the party had obtained intelligence indicating the reappearance of some individuals allegedly involved in the 2020 unrest.
According to him, their presence in the constituency, just days before the upcoming elections, raises significant concerns.
Adams warned that the likelihood of disturbances is high unless proactive measures are implemented to preserve peace.
He emphasised the critical need for additional security personnel to deter any attempts to disrupt the electoral process.
The Youth Organiser further appealed to the IGP to ensure that law enforcement agencies remain alert at polling stations and actively safeguard the fairness of the elections.
He underscored the importance of a transparent vote-counting process, free from interference, to maintain public confidence in the outcome.
“We have picked up intelligence that individuals who fired gunshots into the crowd at the Steps to Christ Centre that led to one person sustaining injuries during the 2020 elections are in the constituency a few days before the elections. We want the IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare to take up the matter since we don’t want a repeat of the 2020 incident."
“The IGP must act swiftly and decisively in the face of this mounting threat. This intelligence must not be treated with indifference. It must be acted upon before this dangerous plot unfolds,” he said.
