The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is maintaining its position that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot evade responsibility for Ghana's current economic challenges.
Former President Mahama emphasised that every member of the Akufo-Addo administration must be held accountable for the nation's economic situation.
In a response to the 2024 NPP flagbearer's address last week, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, said Dr Bawumia cannot escape accountability.
Mr Gyamfi argued that Dr Bawumia cannot have it both ways, and Ghanaians will not tolerate this hypocritical behaviour and dishonesty.
Addressing the nation on Wednesday, February 7, in Accra, the Vice President said he has learnt lessons from the seven years of the Akufo-Addo government and reviewed his visions for the country.
“As Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver's seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities," he said.
“Clearly, the initial conditions that we inherited in 2017 are not the same as will be in 2025. Therefore, my priorities will be different. We have done many good things and I will be seeking to build on them,” he noted.
Dr Bawumia assured that as President he will ensure he will create a government that will accommodate everyone to tap into the resourcefulness and talents of people irrespective of our different ethnic, political and religious backgrounds.
Nevertheless, Mr Gyamfi insists that Dr Bawumia must take responsibility for the challenges he contributed to alongside President Akufo-Addo.
“Bawumia has appropriated all the key achievements of this government such as their so-called digitalization programs, drone medical delivery system, agenda 111, 1 constituency 1 ambulance etc”
“Therefore, Bawumia cannot take the credit and give the mess to Akufo-Addo. Bawumia cannot approbate and reprobate. Ghanaians will not accept this nauseating hypocrisy and dishonesty.”

"For the records, a vice President is not a MERE MATE BUT AN ASSISTANT DRIVER OR SECOND DRIVER. He is elected on the same ticket as the President. In the absence of the President, Bawumia acts as President. The two of them therefore have collective responsibility for the mandate given them and collective liability for the failings of their government.”

Again, Bawumia on his own website claims that he is the chair of the EMT responsible for shaping government policies and guiding the implementation of government policies. That clearly is not a mere advisory role.”
"Lastly, recall that Bawumia in opposition directed 170 questions to then Vice President, Amissah Arthur who was head of the EMT at the time. If Vice Presidents are mere mates and advisors, why did Bawumia direct his 170 questions to Amissah Arthur? Hypocrisy at its apogee!”
