Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana and a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has cautioned party delegates to remain vigilant against what he described as an orchestrated campaign of insults and misinformation directed at him as the presidential primary approaches.
Addressing delegates at Manso Adubia in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, January 20, Dr Bawumia said his campaign team had picked up intelligence indicating that some rival aspirants were preparing to deploy personal attacks and false claims in the closing stages of the race.
According to him, with barely two weeks to the primary, the shift towards insults and untruths signals a lack of substance in the campaigns of his opponents.
He urged delegates not to be swayed by such tactics but to focus instead on the future of the party and its prospects in the general election.
“This is not an insulting competition,” Dr Bawumia told the gathering, arguing that sustained personal attacks are often a reflection of a campaign that is struggling.
“Because they know their campaign is failing, that is why they are saying, ‘If you miss the ball, don’t miss the man,’” he said.
He maintained that the attacks were aimed at him personally because his rivals were unable to challenge his ideas and track record.
Despite this, he said he remained undeterred and committed to a positive, issue-based campaign.
“A few days ago, we received intelligence that, with two weeks left to the primary, they are planning a strategy to insult me and spread lies about me,” he said.
“So be alert and wary. You will hear a lot of lies about me. Don’t mind them.”
Dr Bawumia expressed confidence in the judgment of party delegates and reiterated his focus on victory.
“They want to change your minds, but don’t be distracted. Go and vote for me,” he added, stressing that his campaign would remain centred on ideas, unity and winning power for the NPP.
