The Member of Parliament for Ayensuano, Ida Adwoa Asiedu, has spoken on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ability to forgive political opponents who have attacked him in the course of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal race.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Asiedu said, “The Bible tells us that you can forgive, but you are not required to forget. Dr. Bawumia, even when people attack him, does not respond with anger, he simply smiles.”
She added that disagreements and harsh words are normal in politics and that going on a witch-hunt is not the way forward.
Drawing parallels with previous leaders, she noted, “I remember when former President Kufour was about to contest, even members within the party opposed him. Yet he became president. The same happened with former President Nana Addo. Commentary and opposition cannot stop the destiny that God has for a candidate.”
On Bawumia’s approach to party unity, she explained, “If people attack him during the primaries, he does not attack back. That is what he stands for. I believe that if he wins the primaries, he will put everything behind him and focus on ensuring the togetherness we want as a party.”
Her comments come as Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 vice-presidential candidate, faces criticism from some opponents, including former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
She noted that Bawumia has chosen to ignore these attacks and focus on winning while maintaining peace within the party.
The January 31 internal contest is intensifying, with party figures publicly declaring support for preferred candidates as the NPP prepares for its next phase of reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
