The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has made a passionate appeal for peace in Bawku and other conflict-prone areas in Ghana, calling on divine intervention to end long-standing tensions.

His remarks came during a courtesy visit from a delegation of GCB Bank PLC, led by Mr Sina Kamagate, Executive Head of Retail Banking.

Speaking during the brief but solemn interaction at his residence in Fadama-Accra on Wednesday, the 106-year-old cleric offered heartfelt prayers for national stability, singling out Bawku, Walewale, and Yendi as communities in urgent need of reconciliation and calm.

“May Allah grant our country peace and harmony, and security. Wherever there is no peace, may Allah grant them and restore peace,” the Chief Imam said.

“We are praying for Bawku and Walewale. The sort of tensions there—may Allah solve the problem for us. We still pray for Yendi. May God grant them peace and harmony,” he added.

Bawku, located in the Upper East Region, has been plagued by recurring chieftaincy and ethnic-related tensions, which have at times turned violent.

Religious and traditional leaders across the country have consistently appealed for dialogue, tolerance, and sustainable peace-building efforts in the area.

The Chief Imam’s prayers extended beyond conflict zones, covering the leadership of the nation. He asked for divine support for the President of Ghana and his appointees, calling on God to inspire them with wisdom, loyalty, and commitment to the nation’s welfare.

“We pray for the President of our country. May God grant him the support. His appointees that he has appointed—we pray that God inspire them to be loyal and to support his work,” he said.
“We pray that whatever policy or thought he has brings goodness to our country. May they be able to help him achieve that.”

He also prayed for all Ghanaians, including those whose needs may be unspoken or forgotten.

“Whatever we have prayed and hoped for, may Allah grant them to us. Even those that we have forgotten and not asked, may He fill in the gap for us.”

The visit by GCB Bank’s delegation included a donation of a large bull and a cash contribution to support the Chief Imam’s Eid al-Adha celebrations.

It was part of the bank’s broader CSR efforts to strengthen relationships with religious communities and contribute to peace and social harmony. GCB has also announced the upcoming launch of a new “Hajj Account” to help Muslims save towards the pilgrimage to Mecca, reinforcing its inclusive financial strategy.
