The Volta regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana has cut the power supply to three district assemblies in the Volta Region for non-payment of electricity bills.
This forms part of a one-month nationwide exercise to retrieve GHȼ5.7 billion from debtors nationwide.
The assemblies were disconnected after they failed to make payments when the ECG revenue team visited and demanded payment of their electricity bills, which spans between 2021 and February, 2023.
The Agotime Ziope District Assembly at Kpetoe, Ho West District Assembly at Dzolokpuita, and South Dayi District Assembly at Kpeve owe the ECG GH₵13,145, GH₵41,252.83, and GH₵31,760.31 respectively.
The Volta Regional Acting General Manager of ECG, Ing. Michael Buabin, said the exercise was necessitated by the lack of commitment exhibited by the assemblies to clear the debt.
He said the company is poised to ensure a stable power supply to clients, hence, would need money to make this a reality.
“We want to make Volta Region the hub of excellent customer service so we want to ensure stable power supply in the Region and the revenue from our customers will enable us to complete pending projects and initiate new ones”, he explained.
Ing. Buabin, however, commended the Adaklu and Afadzato South District Assemblies for paying their debt to avoid disconnection and help the ECG stay in business.
“When we visited assemblies like Adaklu and Afadzato South, they owed GH₵14,858 and GH₵11,123 respectively but both paid GH₵12,500 and GH₵10,500 respectively. We want to thank them for paying their bills and urge other customers to emulate this patriotic act to enable us to keep the lights on”, he said.
