Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu has asked President Akufo-Addo to call the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman to account for his alleged involvement in galamsey.

He said that is the only way President Akufo-Addo's commitment not to shield any member of his party or government will be taken seriously.

Mr Kpebu said the President should put the interest of the country above all others in his quest to end the galamsey menace.

Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on Thursday, he said Ghanaians will vote for the President’s party should he do the right things in this fight.

“I think the President should do the right thing. If not for anything at all, I think that Chairman Wontumi has to be called to account.

“The President should forget about votes. If you do the right thing, we are the same people who voted for him.

"If he does the right thing, whoever he wants to replace him will be voted for, but if he runs down this ludic that we will lose votes, it is not going to take them anywhere,” he said.

At the said engagement, President Akufo-Addo asked them to help him end the menace.

He also assured that he will not shield any appointee found culpable.

“I am not here to threaten anybody, but I want you to know that this is a struggle that I take very seriously and I will not be in a position to protect anybody against evidence brought up about their complicity in this matter…I am a lawyer and I always deal with facts when the facts are brought against you, you will be invited to comment on them.

His company, Akonta Mining Limited has been cited in this also.

However, Mr Wontumi has denied reports he is involved in illegal mining.

He insisted that his company, Akonta Mining Limited, has all the required documentation.

Speaking on Wontumi TV on Monday, Chairman Wontumi said he is ready to make the documents available.

“I am appealing to them to use the law. They should do their investigations, and we should let the law work.”

“I have a large scale company which Akonta mining is under… All the required documents I have, I will make all available[sic],” he added.
