The government has increased monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers to GH¢3,000 and says six quarters of payments have been made since the start of the current administration.

Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5.

He said the increase in allowances formed part of government’s effort to strengthen the traditional leadership system and improve support for chiefs who work closely with local government authorities.

“Under President Mahama the payment of monthly allowances to Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers increased from GH¢1,200 to GH¢3,000 respectively, with six quarters duly paid since inception of this government,” he said.

Mr Ayariga said government was also exploring ways to use local government resources to support traditional councils, arguing that many MMDAs relied heavily on the cooperation of paramount chiefs and traditional councils to implement development programmes effectively.
