The President of Ghana Athletics, Bawah Fuseini, has urged the government to renovate the El Wak Sports Stadium, which has fallen into disrepair.
His appeal comes as the Stadium, once a hub for athletics and sports events, is unable to host competitions like the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games due to the deteriorating condition of its tracks.
Speaking at the launch of the 2024 SESSA Games, Fuseini expressed his disappointment that the games had to be relocated to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, adding unnecessary strain on its world-class athletics tracks.
“We ask ourselves, why aren’t we hosting this at El Wak? It’s because of the track’s condition.
"We’re appealing to the government, through our board chairman and Acting Director General, Seth Panwun Boyoyo, to renovate El Wak and other facilities nationwide.
"This will alleviate pressure on the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, reserving its world-standard tracks for international competitions while using El Wak and other stadia for domestic purposes,” he said.
Fuseini further emphasised the importance of renovating El Wak and other sports facilities to support the development of athletics and other sports disciplines across the country.
“We appeal to the Ministry and government to refurbish El Wak’s tracks, a hub for athletics and SESSA among security services.
"Renovating it will significantly boost athletics and sports development nationwide, as SESSA encompasses various disciplines beyond athletics,” he continued.
The call for renovations comes at a critical time when Ghana’s athletic infrastructure is in need of upgrades to meet international standards and to provide athletes with adequate facilities for training and competition.
