As at July 21, 2021, Ghana’s Covid-19 confirmed cases have reached a staggering 101,170, out of which 96,255 persons have recovered.

821 persons have died from the novel coronavirus within the same period.

According to the Ghana Health Service website, this is the cumulative figure for all confirmed cases in the country since March 2020.

The website also revealed that about 26 of the current 4,094 active cases are severe while 15 people are in critical condition.

Ghana records this new high at a point where the advent of the Covid-19 Delta strain is ushering the country into a third wave.

While Greater Accra Region continues to be the region with the highest recorded cases, Savannah Region is the area with the least recorded case count.

A lax enforcement of the Covid-19 safety protocols in the country and blatant breaches of the same protocols by government officials and a cross-section of Ghanaians have exacerbated efforts to reduce the country’s infection rate.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile Saturday, the Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Justice Yankson said with regards to the very low number of vaccinated persons in the country, it was only prudent that the Covid-19 safety protocols are strictly enforced and observed.

He stated that at present, health facilities responsible for managing Covid-19 cases are rapidly running out of beds for infected persons.

Giving a breakdown, he indicated that in June, the GIDC saw only eight patients, however, the numbers have increased significantly in July to about 150 patients at the OPD level. Again, there are more than 50 patients at the HDU-ICU department, among others.

Also, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and other hospitals are struggling to find places for patients to receive treatment.

“If you look at all the statistics, you’ll see that the wave is here with us. We haven’t reached its peak but it’s here with us,” Dr. Yankson said.

Also on Newsfile, Pharmacist and Fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr. Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, has urged Ghanaians to adhere to the Covid-19 safety protocols in the country religiously.

With the country readying to experience a third wave of the pandemic, he said it is now more urgent than before, to adhere to the protocols.
