The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has reaffirmed Ghana’s sovereign ownership of its natural resources, stressing that the country’s gold must be protected and managed in the long-term interest of the people.
In a statement issued to mark Ghana’s Constitution Day on Tuesday, January 7, GoldBod said its establishment is rooted in the constitutional mandate to safeguard national assets and strengthen governance in the extractive sector.
“As a creature of the Constitution, GoldBod exists to safeguard the nation’s gold, strengthen governance, and ensure lasting value for the people of Ghana,” the statement said, underscoring the Board’s responsibility to protect the country’s mineral wealth.
GoldBod noted that the reaffirmation of sovereignty over natural resources is critical at a time when global demand for gold continues to rise, making it imperative for Ghana to adopt policies that promote transparency, accountability and sustainable national benefit.
The Board added that its work is aimed at ensuring Ghana’s gold resources contribute meaningfully to economic stability, development and intergenerational equity, in line with the spirit and letter of the 1992 Constitution.
