Ho West Constituency, a sprawling district in Ghana with a rich history and diverse representation, is witnessing the rise of a new political force: the Ho West Movement for Change.

This group, driven by a desire for fresh leadership and a concern for the constituency’s future, has vowed to unseat the current Member of Parliament, Hon. Emmanuel Bedzrah, in the 2028 elections.

Hon. Bedzrah, representing Tsito, has held the seat for five consecutive terms, a total of 20 years by the end of his current tenure. While acknowledging some support he has provided, primarily in the form of educational assistance to a select group of loyalists, the Movement argues that his long tenure has stagnated the constituency, particularly hindering opportunities for the youth.

“For 16 years, he was completely uninspiring to the youth,” a member of the Movement stated. “His support has been concentrated amongst a small circle, who in turn manipulate the system to ensure his continued dominance.”

The Movement alleges that Hon. Bedzrah is actively leveraging his position to secure favorable positions for his supporters within the constituency’s political landscape and public sector. This, they believe, is a deliberate strategy to ensure their continued allegiance and support in upcoming primary elections.

“He wins his primaries by the advantage of having a lot of money, and by incumbency advantage,” a spokesperson for the Movement explained. “He is clearly going to leverage these factors going into the 2027 parliamentary primaries.”

The Ho West Constituency boasts eight major traditional areas, each with its own distinct identity and aspirations. Over the 36 years of the Fourth Republic, the constituency has been represented by three MPs, reflecting this diversity. The first MP, from Avatime, served for one term. The second, from Kpedze, served for three terms. Many believe it is time for another area to have the opportunity to lead.

“In all the recent NDC parliamentary primaries, he had many fierce challengers from the traditional areas that have not yet had the chance to represent the constituency,” the spokesperson added. “Many of the contenders would be very good MPs if they would have the chance.”

Recognizing the challenges they face against a well-established and financially resourceful incumbent, the Ho West Movement for Change is outlining two possible pathways to achieving their goal.

First, they are appealing to Hon. Bedzrah to consider stepping aside after 20 years of service and to allow for fresh leadership to emerge. This would be seen as a gracious act, acknowledging his service while opening the door for a new generation of leaders.

However, the Movement is also preparing for the possibility that Hon. Bedzrah will contest the next primary, which they believe he may win through the power of incumbency and financial influence. In this scenario, the Movement vows to sponsor a prominent and respected citizen of the constituency as an independent candidate in the general elections of 2028.

This bold strategy underscores the Movement’s determination to effect change in Ho West. They believe the constituency is ready for a new direction, one that prioritizes inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainable development for all its citizens.
