Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has strongly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s handling of loans.
According to him, they mismanaged the $11.5 billion in borrowed funds within five years but failed to deliver on their promises to develop the country.
He asserted that such resources could have transformed Ghana into a developed nation like Dubai under his leadership.
“...In just five years, they borrowed $11.5 billion...With that amount, I could have transformed Ghana into Dubai. When you compare what I achieved with $3.5 billion to what they have done, it’s clear the money has not been used effectively.”
He made this comment during a meeting with Islamic clerics in Kumasi and a special prayer service with the Muslim community at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Mr Mahama noted that his administration could have made efficient use of borrowed funds.
He added that during his four years as President, his government borrowed $3.5 billion to execute major projects, including the construction of a harbour, Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport, and other infrastructure developments.
