The Minister nominee for Communications, Digitalisation and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George has pledged to position Ghana as the leading hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa by 2028.
Speaking during his vetting on Thursday, 30th January 2025, he outlined his vision for Ghana’s AI ecosystem. He stressed the need for strong collaboration between government agencies, private sector players, and global tech firms to ensure Ghana not only participates in the AI revolution but takes a leadership role.
“AI in 2025 is like Bitcoin in 2013,” he stated,
“President John Mahama has a clear vision on his AI policy, and we are going to take the current AI strategy that was developed by the previous government, review it, and make it fit for purpose by engaging industry to ensure that Ghana becomes the hub for artificial intelligence on the African continent.
"We are going to do this by making sure that our innovation hubs as promised in our manifesto are executed and then we will introduce AI on top of big data that we are taking and Ghana will become the hub for AI, machine learning, cyber security, data analytics and data processing on the African continent.”
He noted that his plan aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which focuses on AI, big data, cybersecurity, and digital innovation.
He noted that while the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government laid the foundation for AI development, the Mahama administration will enhance and implement a more robust strategy.
