Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta Akyea, has expressed strong disapproval over Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's resignation as Majority Leader.
Mr Atta Akyea described the timing of the resignation as unfavorable for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Members of Parliament, particularly with just a few months to the December general elections.
He stressed the precarious nature of the situation for the party and urged a cautious handling of the matter.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM on Thursday, February 22, Mr. Atta Akyea conveyed his surprise at the decision.
I was very surprised because I felt considering the times we are in, we can’t do things like that. Because our situation is a bit precarious if you look at our numbers and that of the NDC. And I felt it was too late in the day to make changes to crush our unity. So I was a bit surprised it happened, he told host, Osei Bonsu in Twi.
Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu officially resigned from his position on Wednesday, February 21, as confirmed by sources within the NPP hierarchy.
Reports indicate that the Suame MP willingly stepped down after a meeting with the NPP caucus in Parliament and the executive, including President Akufo-Addo.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to convene a meeting today, Friday, February 23, to address Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's resignation as the Majority Leader in Parliament.
Scheduled to take place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra at 9am, the meeting aims to facilitate the appointment of his successor, with many speculating that the current Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, will assume the role.
