Black Stars defender Baba Rahman has delivered a stinging critique of the poor state of football pitches in Ghana, calling it a "national disgrace" that demands immediate attention.
His comments come in the wake of renewed scrutiny over Ghana’s playing surfaces, especially after the 2025 MTN FA Cup final was held at the University of Ghana Stadium, which drew widespread criticism due to its subpar pitch.
The issue had previously led to a CAF stadium ban last year — later rescinded — citing poor pitch conditions among other concerns.
In a yet-to-be-televised exclusive interview with Joy Sports, scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2025, on JoyNews, Rahman urged authorities to act decisively to resolve the long-standing problem.
“This is a serious issue that needs urgent attention,” he said.
“I’m pleading with those in charge — let’s at least ensure the national team has a proper pitch to play on. Sometimes it’s really embarrassing.”
Rahman also revealed the impact the poor pitch conditions have had on Ghana’s international reputation.
“You go back to your club after international duty, and your teammates mock the country because of the pitches we play on. It’s honestly a national disgrace.”
While acknowledging the challenges posed by Ghana’s climate, he insisted that more could be done.
“I understand the weather makes pitch maintenance difficult, but we still need to make the effort. Improving our pitches will benefit all our national teams — from the juniors to the women’s sides.”
The interview will air at 6:30 am on JoyNews and 8 am on Joy Prime on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
