Former President and 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has assured the people of the Volta Region that the next NDC government will prioritize the repair of the Ho-Aflao road network. He made this commitment during a campaign rally at the Ho market, as part of his four-day tour of the region.
Addressing a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters, traders, and market women, Mahama emphasized that the current state of the roads is hindering economic growth in the region.
He stressed that improved road infrastructure is crucial for enhancing the livelihoods of the people, particularly women traders who depend on these roads to transport goods between markets in Ho, Aflao, and other parts of the region.
"The Ho-Aflao roads are critical for the economic activities in this region. These roads link major markets, not just within Ghana, but even as far as Lomé in Togo. By repairing these roads, we will be making it easier for our hardworking women to transport their goods safely and quickly. This will boost trade, reduce transportation costs, and ultimately improve the economy of the Volta Region," Mahama stated.
He highlighted the strategic importance of the Aflao-Dzodze-Ho stretch, which serves as a major artery connecting the southern and central parts of the region. According to Mahama, the repair of this road would facilitate smoother travel and trade, linking local markets and enhancing cross-border trade with neighbouring Togo.
The former President also touched on the broader economic impact of this infrastructure development. He noted that improved roads would attract more businesses to the region, create jobs, and enhance the overall standard of living for the residents. "When the roads are good, businesses will come. Investors will see the potential in this region and bring in more opportunities. This is what we mean by real development—development that touches the lives of ordinary people," he said.
Mahama’s promise to repair the Ho-Aflao roads was met with cheers and applause from the crowd, who expressed hope that the NDC’s return to power would bring much-needed development to the Volta Region. Many traders and residents at the rally shared their daily struggles with transporting goods over the deteriorated roads and welcomed the former President's commitment as a potential solution to their challenges.
This pledge comes as part of Mahama's broader campaign promise to focus on infrastructural development across the country, particularly in regions that have been underserved. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that every part of Ghana experiences equitable development under an NDC government.
The four-day tour of the Volta Region saw Mahama visiting various communities and engaging with local leaders and residents, listening to their concerns, and sharing his vision for a prosperous Ghana.
As the 2024 elections approach, the NDC flagbearer’s promises to the people of the Volta Region will likely play a significant role in the party's campaign strategy, particularly in securing votes from a region known for its strong support of the NDC.
The repair of the Ho-Aflao roads, if undertaken, would mark a significant improvement in the region's infrastructure, potentially transforming the economic landscape and reinforcing the NDC's commitment to regional development.
