The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has denied allegations that he is self-centered when it comes to the management of the Police Service.
According to him, assumptions that he does not involve the Police Management Board (POMAB) in decision making are all false.
He said his goal as the Head of Police is not to solely run the institution and make it all about him, rather it is to put Ghana first and prioritise its peace and security.
“It’s a lie, it isn’t about Dampare, it’s about the Police Service, it’s about Ghana and it’s about the peace and security of this country,” he said.
Speaking before Parliament’s Committee tasked to probe the ‘leaked IGP tape’, he indicated that members of the Board, who were there with him on Wednesday, September 12, can even testify to the unity and team work in the Council.
“Unfortunately they’re not on oath so they cannot testify on this matter, if they had been on oath we would’ve heard from them, they call it ‘united POMAB’ and it’s a chain, nobody breaks it.”
“We can’t go anywhere without making sure that they’re ahead of me, we can’t arrive at any destination without making sure we account for everybody, we cannot go and sit at anywhere without making sure that everybody has a chair,” he said.
Dr. Dampare added that, these allegations made by COP Alex Mensah, and Superintendent George Asare when they appeared before the committee were all fabricated stories to create a bad impression of him to the public and tarnish his image.
“And we cannot start any meeting without asking where everyone is, so this whole idea is trying to put certain things together and paint you black and make sure that you don’t look presentable in the eyes of everybody.”
“An institution that does not belong to me, I come and monopolise it, then I’m not a good leader and they know within their hearts of hearts that they were peddling falsehood in order to package it and send it to places and make me look bad,” he explained.
According to him, teamwork was instituted by God Almighty and he feels incomplete when he does not work in a team because he will always need a second thought on issues before putting them out.
“The Lord that I serve, he instituted teamwork and I get incomplete when I’m not functioning in a team...”
“I have one philosophical belief, it takes other human beings for other human beings to be human beings, and knowing that it’s an institution and not sole proprietorship and even sole proprietorship you’ll still have to work with people,” he indicated.
Few months ago, there was a leaked audio recording which centres on a plot to oust the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The conversation on the tape involved the Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu who said he recorded the tape, and senior police officer, Superintendent George Asare. They have all appeared before the committee.
