Minority in Parliament is calling on government to urgently settle the outstanding tuition fees of Ghanaian students studying at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Monday, March 16, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, warned that the students risk deportation if the situation is not addressed promptly.
According to him, the affected students, who are beneficiaries of government scholarships, have not had their fees paid by the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, leaving them in breach of UK immigration requirements.
“These students have been given just one week by the UK immigration authorities to return home. They are crying for help, and their tuition fees have still not been remitted. We are urging the Majority Chief and the government to draw the attention of the Scholarship Secretariat so that the fees are paid immediately. Failure to act could result in the deportation of our own children.”
The Effutu MP said the students have petitioned Parliament, expressing distress over the delay and the potential disruption to their studies.
He urged the government to act swiftly to prevent any negative consequences on both the students’ academic futures and Ghana’s reputation with international institutions.
