The two-day nationwide clean-up exercise has commenced in seven flood-affected regions across the country, with residents, institutions and authorities beginning efforts to clear refuse, desilt choked drains and restore public spaces.
The exercise, which started at 6:00 am on Friday, July 10, 2026, is expected to continue until 1:00 pm and will resume on Saturday, July 11, within the same time period.
Although activities in some areas started slowly in the early hours of Friday, participation is gradually picking up as residents, local authorities, waste management teams and other stakeholders join the exercise.
According to the government, the first day of the exercise involves Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), public and private institutions, security services, educational institutions, waste management companies and members of the public.
On Saturday, attention will shift more towards community-level activities, with residents, community groups, volunteers, traditional authorities, security services, MMDAs and waste management companies expected to take part.
As part of measures to ensure maximum participation, shops, markets, commercial establishments, corporate organisations and other non-essential businesses within the seven flood-affected regions are expected to remain closed from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm on both days.
However, institutions providing essential and emergency services have been exempted.
The Ministry has urged residents, businesses, transport operators, religious organisations and other stakeholders to actively support the exercise as part of efforts to restore clean and safe communities following recent floods.
