Immigration officers in the Akatsi North District intercepted three booklets of ballot papers, each containing 1,000 sheets, during a routine monitoring exercise on December 5, 2024.
The interception occurred at Hevi, an unapproved route often associated with irregular cross-border activities.
The ballots, totalling 3,000, were allegedly en route to Vodome in neighbouring Togo.
The suspect, Abraham Ahiabu, the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akatsi North, claimed during questioning that the ballots were intended for voter education.
He further revealed possession of an additional 20,000 ballot booklets, raising significant concerns about the purpose of the materials.
The use of an unapproved route has deepened suspicions, with many questioning why Ghanaian ballots would be transported to Togo for voter education, especially so close to the elections.
The incident has led to allegations of a possible attempt to facilitate foreign voter participation in Ghana’s electoral process.
Mr Ahiabu has been handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the Akatsi North District headquarters for further investigation, while the seized ballot papers have been sent to the District Electoral Commission for verification of their authenticity.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to protect the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system.
