In a bid to solidify its position and retain the Ledzokuku constituency in the Greater Accra Region in the upcoming 2024 general elections, the Gender Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has introduced an initiative known as the 'Manifesto Desk' in Ledzokuku.

This platform, designed to engage voters directly, was set up in the constituency on Saturday, September 21 to allow residents, drivers, pedestrians and the general public in Teshie to have direct face-to-face interactions with the NDC communicators on the key policy proposals in the recently unveiled 'Resetting Ghana" 2024 NDC Manifesto.

A Strategic Move to Retain a Key Battleground Constituency

Ledzokuku, a swing constituency, was snatched from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2020 by the incumbent Member of Parliament Ben Ayiku. He won the parliamentary seat in a closely contested election.

The NDC is keen on retaining the seat and is expanding its influence in this predominantly fishing and trading municipality.

The 'Manifesto Desk' initiative offers a direct line of communication between the party and voters, giving residents real-time opportunity to engage communicators on the party's manifesto proposals.

The initiative is part of the Smile Again Campaign, a collaboration between Shafik Mahama, son of former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC Manifesto Committee, and the party's communication bureau.

Key Policy Promises for Ledzokuku

At the 'Manifesto Desk,' party representatives shared several policy proposals aimed at improving the livelihoods of Ledzokuku residents.

Additionally, recognising the fishing community’s needs, the NDC pledged to reform the distribution of premix fuel.

The party promised that its reforms would ensure fair and transparent access to fuel, preventing favouritism in its distribution — a crucial issue for the constituency's many fisherfolks.

Broader National Policies Displayed

Beyond Ledzokuku-specific promises, the 'Manifesto Desk' showcased some of the NDC's national policy initiatives that appeal to a wide range of voters.

Among these are, the Free Primary Healthcare Programme; the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Care); 'Mo Ne Yo Pension Programme'; Women-Centric policies like the party's Free Sanitary Pad Programme and the establishment of a Women’s Bank; and Support for Persons with Disabilities, which includes a pledge to provide free tertiary education for this demographic.

Community Engagement and Feedback

Residents of Ledzokuku who visited the 'Manifesto Desk' said they were impressed with the direct communication style and welcomed the opportunity to ask questions about the NDC’s plans.

This face-to-face engagement allowed constituents to voice their concerns and offer suggestions regarding the upcoming elections.

One attendee, a local market woman, praised the NDC’s market enhancement proposal, stating "This modern market will really help us. It’s something we've needed for years, and I’m glad the NDC is addressing it."

The initiative is expected to be rolled out across other key constituencies nationwide as part of the NDC’s strategy to communicate its comprehensive economic policies directly to the electorate.

The Road to 2024

As the December 7 elections draw near, the NDC said it is intensifying efforts to not only retain its seats but also sway undecided voters with innovative approaches like the 'Manifesto Desk.'

With a focus on practical solutions and inclusive policies, the party hopes to secure both the presidency for John Dramani Mahama and key parliamentary seats like Ledzokuku for Ben Ayiku.
