A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Ameyaw, has stated that although five candidates are contesting for the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections, the real race is between Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Monday, Mr Ameyaw noted that while all aspirants are qualified, the political momentum and grassroots support clearly favour the two leading contenders.
“Each of the persons who are on our notice of poll, who are our aspirants, is uniquely qualified to lead the New Patriotic Party. But of course, there are others who are more than. When you talk about marketability, you are not going to tell me Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was just introduced to us a few months ago,” he said.
Mr Ameyaw argued that among the two, the former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, stands the better chance of emerging victorious.
“I am saying that, of course, we all do know that the race is between Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who of course will win, and then Dr Mahamudu Bawumia,” he asserted.
He stressed that the upcoming January 2026 primaries would be a defining moment for the NPP, as the party seeks a candidate capable of regaining public confidence and winning the 2028 elections.
“This whole election is about NPP recapturing power. So if you are a delegate of the New Patriotic Party and you will be voting on January 31, 2026, there must be an overarching goal that should be your focus — that you need power, that in 2028 it is possible for NPP to come back to power,” he said.
