The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged Independent Power Producers (IPPs) not to postpone their demands for debt payments until former President John Dramani Mahama returns to power.
In a social media post made on Wednesday, October 16, he emphasised the importance of addressing outstanding payments promptly rather than waiting for a potential change in administration.
His remarks come in the wake of the announcement by Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited, which recently shut down its 560 MW power plant.
This closure was attributed to the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) failure to meet its overdue payment obligations, prompting concerns about the stability of Ghana's energy supply.
The shutdown has raised alarms regarding the nation's capacity to meet its power needs, especially during peak demand periods.
Dr Omane Boamah highlighted that the ongoing financial strain on IPPs could have dire consequences for the energy sector and urged stakeholders to engage with the current government.
He stressed that delaying payment requests could lead to further disruptions in power supply, which would affect both consumers and businesses across the country.
"Let me also advise the IPPs not to wait until Mahama becomes president only to be flooding his administration with payment of their debts," he posted.
