Veteran sports journalist Osei Owusu Bempah has proposed the inclusion of clear disciplinary clauses in the Ghana Football Association’s new Standard Player Contract to help curb misconduct among players.
The recently introduced contract seeks to enhance player welfare by outlining minimum standards and obligations in player-club agreements, aiming to reduce legal disputes and promote fairness within the Ghanaian game.
Speaking on Kick Off on Luv FM, Bempah emphasized that while the contract is a step in the right direction, it must go further to include explicit provisions addressing player discipline.
He believes such clauses will serve as a deterrent and promote a culture of professionalism across all levels of the sport.
“I think that in the player contract, whatever it is that the FA and the PFAG are doing, they should be able to insert some of these clauses and conditions.
“And it's not just about inserting the clauses and conditions, but also being able to enforce them. Because we are very good at just writing very beautiful laws on paper. And then when it comes to implementation, even managers become selective,” he said.
He added that: “The formal application of rules and regulations and compliance is required of everybody so that we see the essence and the justification for the inclusion of some of these tenets into the contracts that are signed by players.”
