The Ghana Police Service in the Northern Region has arrested 12 suspects and destroyed several drug dens in Tamale as part of a broader operation to clamp down on crime and improve community safety.
The operation was led by the IGP Special Operations Team and targeted known crime hotspots across the metropolis.
“We went into these areas with one goal: to disrupt the activities of drug peddlers and ensure our communities are safe,” DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, leader of the IGP Special Operations Team, said.

DSP Jalil explained that the operation involved 105 police personnel and 10 service vehicles. One of the key targets was the notorious “Aluta Boys” area at Changli, where eight suspects were arrested.
Large quantities of opioids and substances suspected to be Indian hemp were also seized during the operation.

“Our message is clear: we will not tolerate drug peddling and abuse in our communities. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure Tamale remains a safe place to live and do business,” he said.
He added that the team destroyed several wooden structures used as hideouts and drug dens, setting them ablaze to prevent their continued use for criminal activities.

According to DSP Jalil, the operation forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s New Year operational strategy aimed at curbing violent and economic crimes, including robbery and attacks on individuals engaged in commercial activities.
“We are committed to proactive, intelligence-driven policing and community safety. We urge citizens to join us in this fight and provide information to support our efforts,” he stated.

DSP Jalil confirmed that all 12 suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and further action will be taken in accordance with the law.
