The Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare has urged political parties and independent candidates to manage their expectations ahead of the 2024 elections, underlining the crucial need for peace and stability in what will inevitably be a competitive contest.
The reminder was delivered at a police briefing held with representatives from all political parties on 21st November, focusing on the police force’s preparations for the upcoming polls.
Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, emphasised the significance of maintaining calm regardless of the election outcome.
He highlighted that the electoral process would result in both winners and losers and encouraged all parties to prepare accordingly to preserve national unity.
During his address, Dr Dampare reassured the gathering that the police would respond to any incidents of electoral violence with professionalism.
He noted that officers are well-prepared to assess situations and take the necessary actions, whether to calm tensions or to take stronger measures when required.
The Inspector General made it clear that the police would uphold a neutral stance throughout the election period, focusing on safeguarding the safety and security of all Ghanaians.
He called on political actors to cooperate with the police and respect the rule of law, thereby contributing to a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
“With the 13 or the 12, whichever it is, there is one clear thing, only one will win, the rest will not win. In the same way, the 801 vying for the position of 276 seats, only and I repeat only 276 will win, the rest will not win. We need to come to this realisation and therefore measure our expectations."
“If I want to be very blunt, I will say that as you plan to celebrate your possible victory, plan to celebrate your defeat or endure your defeat.
"So at the end of the day, Ghana and only Ghanaians will win in this election as we have said”, he advised.
