Aide to former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Miracles Aboagye, has cautioned that posterity will judge the current government if it fails to end the menace of illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, 16 August, a day after the burial of eight officers who died in a military helicopter crash while on anti-galamsey duty, Mr Aboagye stressed that the sacrifices of those who lost their lives must not be in vain.
"For the first time, they have in us, the NPP, an opposition party that has made a firm commitment not to do politics out of galamsey. They should take advantage of that and let us fix this existential threat once and for all. If they fail at it, posterity will judge them," he said on the show.

The tragedy has reignited national calls for decisive action. Illegal mining continues to devastate Ghana’s water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves, despite successive governments vowing to tackle the menace.
Mr. Aboagye emphasised that, "We are under threat."
