The Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Agbodza, has implored the government to increase its investment in the country's education sector and consider the welfare of teachers.

According to him, although the government continues to invest in infrastructural development in the sector, very little attention has been given to the teachers, who produce the country’s human resources.

Speaking at the 6th Quadrennial and 53rd Delegates Conference of the Ho District Chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Mr. Agbodza grieved the government’s refusal to negotiate salary increment with teachers although charges for services and goods were increased in the 2021 budget. 

He lamented that irrespective of the fact that the majority of the country’s annual budget is allocated to the education sector, it is still plagued with challenges. 

“As a matter of fact, I feel the best we can do for this country in terms of looking forward to development is to invest even more in education,” he said.

“If Ghana wants to play a role in a world that is here and ahead, we should invest in education. If you really want Ghana to play a role tomorrow, yes we should construct roads, we should build hospitals but we can't do that at the expense of the necessary investments in education,” he added. 

Mr. Agbodza also advocated a policy where teachers who are posted or serving in deprived communities are paid some incentives to motivate them to give their best.

A former Volta Regional Education Director and Former Regional and National President of the GNAT, Buadi Mawusi Alexander, urged leaders of the association to fight for the welfare of its members.

He urged the heads of public educational institutions to break away from the culture of silence and engage the media on their challenges for the appropriate actions. 

The Ho District GNAT Chairperson, Lois Tipong-Asare advised stakeholders to ensure technocrats are giving opportunities to run the country’s education system. 

She was elected to serve for another 4-year term.

Madam Tipong-Asare promised to prioritize the welfare of members and see to fruition of plans of the Ho District GNAT Chapter to construct a conference hall.
