Ghana picked up their first win at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following their narrow win over Senegal.
Emmanuel Mensah scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win as the Black Satellites defeated the defending champions to go second in Group C.
The Black Satellites enjoyed a strong start to the game with Aziz Issah coming close to opening the scoring.
The Barcelona B midfielder’s effort deflected off a Senegalese defender before going out for a corner.
Senegal forced the Ghana goalkeeper into his first save of the night in the fifth minute when Yaya Dieme fired into the waiting arms of Gidios Aseako.
Aseako was called into action again minutes later, saving a free kick from the Senegalese captain.
After a spell of chances for Senegal, Ghana scored from their only shot on target in the opening half.
Jerry Afriyie—who was handed a starting berth—put the ball on a silver platter for Emmanuel Mensah—the latter finishing off with a little dink over the goalkeeper to give the Black Satellites the lead.
Afriyie should have made it two for Desmond Ofei’s side moments later but his shot from inside the box was blocked by the onrushing goalkeeper.
Ghana went into the break with the vital lead despite recording only one shot on target.
Aseako was called into action again at the start of the second when he made yet another good save to deny Senegal an equaliser.
Joseph Opoku saw his feeble effort at goal saved by the Senegal goalkeeper as well.
Despite their late resurgence, Aseako was on hand to frustrate Senegal on several occasions picking a yellow card in the process for time wasting.
At the end of the game it was victory for Ghana who moved joint-level at the top of the group ahead of their final group game against Central African Republic.
