The Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has slammed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), accusing the agency of misusing its authority in the recent arrest and detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was released from EOCO custody on Monday, 2nd June, after his legal team opted to withdraw a court motion contesting the terms of his GH¢50 million bail.
In an interview granted to Channel One TV, Mr Tampuli questioned the rationale behind the detention, suggesting it bore the hallmarks of political persecution.
“We thought that was abuse of state power. And it sends a certain signal of some amount of political vendetta against a political party opponent,” he stated.
He further emphasised the political implications of the development, pointing out: “More especially, the chairman of one of the political parties, the biggest opposition party. We thought that was wrong, and we needed to send a certain statement.”
