Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen says the party will soon address issues of abuse of electoral process in the party’s ongoing constituency elections.
Pockets of violence, mistrust and court injunctions have characterised the ongoing constituency elections of the NPP.
Some constituency executives of the party have been accused of hoarding nomination forms and selling them to their preferred candidates thereby denying others equal opportunity to contest.
Speaking to JoyNews, Nana Obiri Boahen described the situation as unfortunate as it will bring division amongst party members.
He noted that the national executives of the party have been served with several injunctions and will take action in due course.
“It will be wrong on my path to say that as it were treat this case with contempt. No, you’re dealing with human beings and a political organisation like ours, we need the numbers so we should not create a situation where some party members should be aggrieved and dissatisfied especially when we are determined to break the eight. The party has been cracking the whip all these years and definitely the party will do so,” he stated.
On Thursday, the Sunyani East Constituency Election Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) rejected over 400 nominees for the position of polling station executive.
Mr. Christian Yeboh Gyabaah, the Secretary of the nine-member committee, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani, that some of the rejected forms were duplicates while others had different registration codes and stamps.
He said the Committee received more than 3,000 applications from party members aspiring for various positions in the 225 polling stations across the 34 electoral areas in the Constituency.
“Many of the rejected forms were supposedly procured from the Party’s Elections’ Directorate in Accra and we are cross-checking to authenticate the truth”, he said.
