The Multimedia Group has filed a petition at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate a series of threats some of its employees have received.
These threats have been linked to JoyNews’ election 2020 coverage and the projection of a likely winner of the elections.
“As we have done since 1996 with accuracy and precision JoyNews TV and the Multimedia group put out a comprehensive coverage of the just-ended polls and projected a likely winner of the election based on detailed analysis.”
“This year’s projection seems to have fueled a series of threats on social media against some of our employees with some of the threats delivered directly into the personal Facebook inboxes of persons mentioned,” part of the petition signed by General Manager of the Joy brands Elvis Kwashie and Chief HR Officer Nana Elegba reads.
The journalists, namely Evans Mensah, Gifty Andoh Appiah, Winston Amoah and Phillip Osei Bonsu of Asempa FM have all received threats following the announcement of the results by the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensa.
This is not the first time the CID of police has been called on to investigate threats against journalists.
The Ghana Journalist Association released a press statement asking the police to investigate threats against the life of freelance journalist Manasseh Azure.
“This is the latest of a series of death threats issued against Manasseh in the past few years. But the venom in the latest death notice served on him via email is poisonous enough to snuff life, and for which reason the GJA wishes to sound the alarm bell for all to respond,” the statement read.
Manasseh Azure revealed on Newsfile, on Saturday, that he had received death threats following an article he wrote about the country’s recent election and its outcome.
The piece titled, ‘ERRORtoral’ Commission and Akufo-Addo’s coup d’état,’ discussed the anomalies with the Techiman South parliamentary results and the non-participation of the people of Santrokfi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) areas in the voting process.
The two issues, if not resolved before the constitution of the next parliament, could result in what Manasseh Azure describes as a “coup against the legislative arm of government.”
Also speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Kenneth Ashigbey, urged the police to show commitment when pursuing cases involving the safety of journalists.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Information Pius Hadzide said although journalists are reporting threats against their lives, he disagrees with the thought that these cases generally means media freedom is under attack.
He said on Joy SMS that the media has enjoyed more freedom under this government that any other.
“I think that that notion about the freedom of the media being under attack is erroneous, it is not happening anywhere, it is the figment of the imagination of some people.”
