Inspector-General of Police (IGP) James Oppong-Boanuh has announced the establishment of an air wing of the Ghana Police Service.
Speaking at a closing ceremony of a three-day National Police Command Conference, the IGP indicated that the construction of hangars have been completed and are awaiting the arrival of helicopters promised by government.
He indicated their plans of establishing this new wing of the Police in 2019 and government, through Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei Opare, promised to procure three helicopters for the service to achieve the goal.
According to the IGP, air wing of the Police Service will function as a unit of the Police force.
"To ensure the effective production of our services, some new units have been created, the air wing, in fact the hangar has been completed, and we are just awaiting the arrival of the helicopters."
In recent times, crime has assumed sophisticated and complex levels amid calls to modernize as well as establish new units to deal with the exigencies.
At least, 6 police officers have undergone aviation and flying training programme in South Africa to form part of the air wing of the Ghana Police Service.
A 514 square-metre hangar has been completed awaiting the arrival of the helicopters.
The facility can accommodate up to 4 helicopters and is located at the Police Deport close to the volleyball court of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) in Accra.
