The driver of Chief Executive of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has been recounting bizarre circumstances under which his wife was shot by unknown assailants on Sunday night.
Benedicta Abena Pokua died of gunshot wounds at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, few hours after the assailants opened fire on her whilst in convoy with her husband at a spot close to the Airport Roundabout in Kumasi.
Though information on the incident is scanty, JoyNews is learning the couple who were returning from an outing, had survived a similar incident on the same night.
Speaking to the media about the incident for the first time, husband of the deceased, Nana Agyemang Prempeh told Kumasi-based Akoma FM that the assailants crisscrossed his wife’s vehicle before shooting her.
He said he assailants first crossed his wife’s vehicle at a spot close to the Airport Roundabout before the shooting incident.
According to him, he had earlier called the police to an accident scene at a location he wouldn’t disclose after a driver rammed a vehicle into the passenger side of his vehicle only for his wife to be shot dead.
“It is true my wife has been shot dead. But the incident didn’t happen in my car.
We were travelling together but in separate vehicles. My vehicle was first to be attacked. The incident occurred at about 11:49 P.M,” he confirmed.
“My wife was in her car and I was also in mine. Upon reaching Airport Roundabout, I saw this car driving recklessly, crisscrossing my wife’s vehicle,” he recounted.
“All of a sudden, I saw another vehicle hit the passenger side of my vehicle. Whilst I remained in the car, I quickly called the police. They responded swiftly and came to the scene within a spate of four minutes.
“After talking for a while, some people around pleaded for leniency for the guys because they appeared drunk. Few minutes after the police had left with the suspects, we drove off”, he recounted events preceding the shooting incident involving his wife.
Personnel from the Regional Anti-Armed Robbery Taskforce moved to the scene after receiving distress calls about the incident.
It is not clear if the assailants picked anything from the deceased's Range Rover vehicle.
But JoyNews checks reveal the assailants sped off in their unregistered vehicle before the police arrived.
Police are tightlipped, except to say that a search has been mounted for the assailants as investigations continue.
