A member of the Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party, Awal Mohammed has hinted that the Party will take a firm decision on Adwoa Safo's issue in due time.
He explained that the Party is undertaking broader consultations for a ruling on the issue.
"The government and the party is taking a firm decision on the issue, and in the coming weeks the result will be out," he stated.
Speaking with Emefa Adeti on Prime Morning on Wednesday, Mr. Awal noted that though her absence from Parliament is adversely affecting government business, it is a constitutional issue that needs to be treated as such.
He added that such issues fall under the mandate of the Privileges Committee of Parliament, hence the Party has to rally with the Committee in resolving the issue before taking a final decision.
"It is not that the person will have to vacate office after 15 days of absence but she has to meet the Privileges Committee to justify her actions," he reiterated.
The Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya was last seen in Parliament in December 2021, when she appeared in the House to dismiss claims by the Minority Caucus that she was impersonated.
She has since not returned to the Chamber.
Recently, some leading government officials and some of her colleague MPs in Parliament accused her of blackmailing the government with a list of demands, including the Deputy Majority Leader position.
Reacting to this, Mr. Mohammed admonished that with Ghana's hung Parliament, the MP's presence is very vital when it comes to Parliamentary proceedings. With this, the leadership of the Party is doing everything possible to resolve the issue.
"It is very surprising for someone who is a Gender Minister to say she wants to be a Deputy Majority Leader; however this is an allegation that needs proof and that is why some people are calling for the sanctioning of Kennedy Agyapong for saying what he said," he added.
Presently, the governing NPP is caught between a rock and a hard place since records in Parliament prove that Madam Safo has been absent from the House for more than 15 sittings without permission from the Speaker.
According to Awal Mohammed, all options are currently on the table, including triggering the constitutional provision to remove her as MP and declare her seat vacant.
