The lead convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, says he was stripped down and kept for eight hours in Police cells following his arrest on Tuesday morning.
According to him, this treatment was mainly for a road traffic offence.
He, however, maintained that he is not above the laws of the land.
Meanwhile, he added that he has been granted a bail of ¢30,000
“Just released. Arrested at 7:30 am. Stripped down and kept in police cells for eight hours for a “road traffic offence”, apparently. 30,000 cedis bail and 2 sureties [sic].”
“I am not above the law," he claimed in a Facebook post.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor was arrested Tuesday, May 17, by officers of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
He was subsequently taken to the East Legon Police cells after he was arraigned before the Madina District Court, where these alleged acts might have happened.
Felicity Nelson, one of the group’s conveners, told JoyNews that he was picked up on Tuesday morning by Police officers while on his way to the court.
“He has a court hearing today. The Police officer asked him to stop and told him he is under arrest. So, he [Barker-Vormawor] asked, ‘why am I under arrest?’ the Police said, ‘your rights are curtailed when you are under arrest.
“So, we don’t know where he is; we don’t know who has arrested him, we don’t know why he’s been arrested. Basically, that’s what is going on,” she said.
It is unclear how the British High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson, will welcome this new development.
This is because she had earlier expressed in knowing the outcome of his arrest.
In a tweet on Tuesday, she said, “Oliver Barker Vormawor, convener of #FixTheCountry movement, arrested again, I understand, for a motoring offence on his way to court. I’ll be interested to see where this goes…”.
