The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, says it appears President Akufo-Addo is still in campaign mode.
He was referring to the President’s State of the Nation address delivered on March 8 on the floor of parliament.
According to him, the President’s address lacked humility and candour and was detached from the country’s reality.
Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews, Fifi Kwetey noted that the President was preoccupied with “looking good” as if he were preparing for another general election rather than being accountable to the people of Ghana.
“We would have thought that given the crisis this country is in at the moment – crisis of the magnitude that we have never seen before, a nation that’s on its knees, a nation that has become virtually what we call the object of ridicule and scorn not just in the global reality but actually even in the sub-region – we would have thought that with such grave situation, the President of our country in delivering the State of the Nation address would show the levels of humility and also the levels of candour to be able to accept what the real situation is, and what has caused that situation.
“Unfortunately what we saw was a President who almost as though is actually not aware of what is happening. He’s still in what you call a campaign mode. For him, his preoccupation is how to look good for the sake of winning an election. It tells you how grave the situation is,” he said.
According to him, he was expecting that with the President being in his final term in office, he would be more candid about the current economic situation and less concerned about the approaching general elections.
“Because I would have thought that given that he has actually run now into his seventh year, he has no election ahead of him, and given the gravity of this situation, he would have reasoned above that campaign mode and moved into the level of a statesman to talk about what truly is assailing this country, what the ailment of the country is, and have that humility to accept that without even being worried because at the end of the day you are not running anymore so you can have the candour and humility, but no,” he said.
