Genk technical director, Dimitri De Conde, said Southampton went over the line in their attempt to sign Ghana forward, Joseph Paintsil, during the summer.
Paintsil was at the centre of a reported swap deal that would have seen Nigeria's Paul Onuachu make a return to Genk while the Ghanaian joins the Championship club.
The deal eventually collapsed with Paintsil not moving and the Nigerian signing for Trabzonspor in Turkey.
“I immediately knew that it would be almost impossible to involve Paintsil in an exchange deal with Onuachu but Southampton kept pushing until they went a step too far for me," Dimitri De Conde told Het Belang van Limburg.
He also disclosed that Paintsil stayed because he is happy at Genk.
“Joseph had indicated in several conversations that he feels good here and does not see Southampton as the next step in his career."
