Illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, in Konongo, Ashanti Region, are posing a significant threat to power supply in parts of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions.
The galamseyers have invaded the Northern Ashanti Mines' concession, which houses key GRIDCo substation pylons, putting crucial infrastructure at risk.
The GRIDCo substation, located within the operational zone of Northern Ashanti Mines, is now in danger due to the encroachment of illegal miners.
Several pylons supporting the power grid have been compromised, raising concerns about potential power outages that could affect Konongo Township and nearby communities.
Despite continuous efforts by the mine’s security task force, illegal mining activities persist in the area.
The mining company has expressed frustration, citing failed attempts to involve local security agencies, including the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in resolving the situation.
The threat escalated recently when the mining company’s security task force was attacked by armed individuals, resulting in injuries and property damage.
This violent confrontation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the company as it tries to safeguard both its operations and the region's power infrastructure.
With intelligence indicating that illegal miners plan another assault on the mine on Thursday, October 10, the company fears a looming confrontation between its security personnel and the galamseyers.
The situation continues to jeopardize mining operations and the stability of power supply in the affected areas.
