Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has responded to criticisms levelled against him for endorsing Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.
The endorsement, which stirred debate within political circles, has drawn reactions from various quarters, including former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, now the Founder and Leader of the Movement for Change.
Speaking at a mini-rally in Abuakwa South on Wednesday, 27th November, the former President addressed his critics, defending his decision to back Dr Bawumia.
Mr Kufuor stressed the value of experience and wisdom in leadership, suggesting that these attributes are often associated with age and can be instrumental in guiding a nation through challenges.
The former president dismissed the criticisms as unwarranted, emphasising that his endorsement of Dr Bawumia was based on careful consideration of his track record and vision for Ghana.
He underscored the need for Ghanaians to focus on electing a leader capable of continuing the country’s progress.
The former President concluded by calling for respect for divergent opinions within the democratic process.
He noted that while criticisms are part of political discourse, the ultimate goal should be to prioritise the nation’s development and stability over personal disagreements.
“I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age."
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is my political affiliation, and it was through this party that I attained the presidency. Additionally, my child, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been elected through the party."
“During my administration, he was a member of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalizing the economy at that time,” Mr Kufuor stated.
