Ghana’s 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, has urged the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, to prioritize investment in nurturing young talent in athletics.

Azamati, who etched his name in Ghanaian sports history by breaking the 22-year-old national 100m record in March 2021, believes that greater emphasis on youth development could transform the country's prospects in global competitions.

“Investment should go into the kids,” Azamati said in an interview on Prime Sports on JoyNews.

“We see the US prioritizing young athletes, making them fall in love with track and field at an early age. By the time they’re 15, they’re competing among the pros, running fast times, and winning medals for their country.

"When we go to the World U20 Games, we hardly see any Ghanaian athletes competing to put Ghana on the map. This needs to change. We must ensure our kids fall in love with sports,” he added.

Azamati was part of Ghana’s 4x100 relay team that qualified for the Paris Olympics.

As part of his efforts to support and celebrate young talent in athletics, Benjamin Azamati will organize a Junior Olympics competition, dubbed the Ghana Junior Olympics, at the University of Ghana Stadium on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
