The former Subin MP, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has rallied supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stay optimistic despite the party’s historic defeat in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on UTV on January 24, 2025, Mr Boakye Antwi stated the need for the party to reflect, rebuild, and recapture power in the 2028 general elections.
Responding to the NPP General Secretary’s claims that spiritual factors caused the 2024 defeat, Mr Boakye Antwi disagreed, stressing that elections are won through “science, data, and strategy,” not spirituality.
The former Deputy Housing Minister pointed to several critical factors he had raised before and after the elections that contributed to the loss.
Reflection: Learning from the Past
The two-time Subin legislator commended the NPP’s decision to review the election, noting that reflection is a vital step forward.
He encouraged the Election Review Committee, chaired by Prof. Mike Ocquaye, to consult broadly and include younger, active leaders such as Dan Botwe and Joe Ghartey.
He also urged party members to be honest during the review process, emphasising the need for professional research to validate findings and guide future decisions.
Rebuilding: Restoring Unity and Strength
According to Mr Boakye Antwi, the NPP must make deliberate efforts to rebuild its structure and unity.
He proposed abolishing the delegate system and granting voting rights to all card-bearing members at all levels of the party to reduce internal conflicts.
Additionally, he suggested allowing former MPs and government appointees to participate in internal elections, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity.
“Tolerance for all, including members who air their views strongly, must be ensured,” he said, highlighting the importance of embracing diverse opinions to rebuild the party’s cohesion.
Recapturing: Strategising for 2028
Mr Boakye Antwi underscored the urgency of crafting a winning strategy for the 2028 elections, though he withheld specific details.
He assured supporters that the plan would involve a comprehensive rebranding effort aimed at restoring the party’s image and appeal.
Reflecting on the 2024 election results, which he described as the worst in the party’s history, Mr Boakye Antwi called for the removal of all national executives who oversaw the party’s descent into opposition.
“We are talking about people who took us from power to opposition, leaving us with 88 MPs and 41% of the popular vote,” he stated.
The former MP, known for his boldness and candour, encouraged all NPP members to maintain faith in the party’s ability to recover and reclaim power.
“The NPP must reflect, rebuild and recapture power come 2028 general elections,” he said.
