The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) elections were thrown into controversy on Saturday March 7, 2025 following claims of an injunction against the process.
According to reports, Presidential candidate, Michael Nii Yarboi had filed an injunction against the election citing concerns over the legitimacy of the current leadership to organize the elections.
However, incumbent GWF President, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has dismissed reports that an injunction was served to halt the elections, stating that neither he, the Electoral Commissioner, nor any weightlifting official had been formally notified of such an order.
“There has not been an injunction. Nobody has served any weightlifting official, the electoral commissioner, or any other person with an order of injunction or even an application for injunction,” he told JoySports.
Shaib also addressed concerns about the tenure of his administration, refuting claims that the board’s mandate had expired.
“In a federation, the only time a tenure ends is when an election has been conducted, Congress has been held, and a new leadership has been officially handed over. Until that happens, my board and I remain in office,” he asserted.
He criticized individuals pushing for change, describing them as uninformed about weightlifting administration.
“Those making noise don’t even have votes. They don’t contribute to weightlifting, they don’t understand administration, yet they want to cause confusion. If they believe they can win, let them contest fairly,” he added.
Despite the controversy, Shaib remains confident in his leadership, dismissing attempts to remove him.
