The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, has confirmed the successful rescue of two Ghanaian women who were lured to Nigeria through a romance scam and subsequently held captive.
According to DCOP Donkor, the rescue operation was conducted through a joint effort between the Ghana Police Service and the Nigerian Federal Police.
The two victims are currently receiving medical care at a secure location in Nigeria and are said to be in stable condition.
The development follows the circulation of a disturbing video on social media showing a young woman bound with rope and being physically assaulted by unidentified individuals.
Investigations revealed that the woman in the video is a Ghanaian national who had been deceived into travelling to Nigeria under the pretext of a romantic relationship.
Upon arrival, she was abducted by a syndicate and subjected to physical abuse. The perpetrators recorded the assault and sent the footage to her family, demanding a ransom for her release.
Further police investigations revealed that another Ghanaian woman had also been lured to the same location by the same criminal group. Both victims were reportedly held at the same premises and subjected to similar ill-treatment.
Families of the two women are reported to have made partial ransom payments before the police intervention.
DCOP Donkor stated that suspects have been arrested by Nigerian authorities and are currently assisting police with investigations.
She commended the collaboration between the two law enforcement agencies and reiterated the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to safeguarding citizens both at home and abroad.
The police urged the public to remain vigilant and cautious of online engagements, especially those involving unfamiliar individuals who make romantic or financial promises.
