A late afternoon accident involving a commercial vehicle and a pedestrian nearly escalated into violence yesterday along the busy Achimota Highway.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:28 p.m. when an unidentified young man was struck while attempting to cross the Achimota Highway.
Eyewitnesses reported the victim was hit by a speeding trotro (commercial minibus), sending shockwaves through the evening commuter crowd.
According to an account by a commercial driver who witnessed the incident, the situation grew volatile immediately after the collision. The driver was nearly attacked by a mob in the process but he managed to escape.
The near-lynching incident highlights growing public frustration over recurring road accidents along the highway.
The injured pedestrian was later transported to the hospital for treatment.
Regular commuters have repeatedly called for improved pedestrian safety measures, including footbridges and enhanced traffic controls at major crossing points.
This latest accident adds to growing concerns about road safety in the Greater Accra region, where pedestrian-vehicle collisions remain a persistent challenge despite ongoing public education campaigns.
