The Eastern North Regional Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the transportation of a massive consignment of suspected Indian hemp across the Volta Lake.
The suspects — Abraham Agonu, Michael Akuaku, and Confidence Amenuveve, were apprehended on Tuesday, May 28, 2025, at Asuboni, near Kwahu Adawso in the Eastern Region. They were allegedly ferrying the narcotics across the lake when they were intercepted.

According to police, a total of 5,950 parcels of compressed and non-compressed leaves believed to be Indian hemp were retrieved during the operation. The haul was found concealed in 85 maxi sacks on board a large engine boat.
The arrest follows a special intelligence-led operation by the regional police aimed at disrupting drug trafficking activities through the Volta Lake route.

Authorities also retrieved a pump-action shotgun, two outboard motors, and the engine-powered vessel used in the smuggling attempt.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the operation may be part of a larger trafficking network led by a man identified only as Felix, who is believed to have boarded a separate boat heading toward the Akate area to evade arrest.

Police have launched a manhunt for Felix and other accomplices believed to be linked to the illicit operation.
The suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
The police stated that this operation forms part of sustained efforts to clamp down on illegal drug trafficking networks operating along Ghana’s inland waterways.
