President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with traditional rulers, emphasising that their counsel is essential to the nation’s development agenda.
Speaking at an engagement with the Overlord of Dagbon Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, and his traditional leaders at the presidency, the President assured that his government will not sideline Traditional authorities, but rather forge a strong partnership to promote inclusive governance.
"We recognise that tradition is complementary to development, tradition is foundational, and this government will not sideline traditional rulers; we will partner with you, we will listen to your wise counsel, we will honour your place in the national architecture of governance," he said.
To demonstrate his administration’s dedication to traditional institutions, President Mahama announced that the Traditional Leadership Support Fund, outlined in the 2025 fiscal year budget, will soon be disbursed.
According to him, the fund aims to assist traditional leaders in renovating royal palaces, safeguarding important cultural archives, and other important things. He said, " (The funds) will finance the preservation of royal archives, rehabilitation of palaces, and logistical supports for traditional areas, including the Dagbon Traditional Council."
Mr Mahama, who has consistently highlighted the importance of chieftaincy in national unity and development, said his government values the voice and contribution of traditional authorities and remains committed to upholding their role in Ghana’s governance structure.
